Two-toed Sloth

Two-toed Sloth

Myrmecophaga tridactyla

Sloths aren't lazy at all. They only got this bad reputation because of their very slow movement. This, however, is due to their energy efficiency. Since sloths feed almost exclusively on leaves, their metabolism is exceptionally slow. In addition, this slow movement provides excellent camouflage in the treetops, making them difficult for their main predator, the harpy eagle, to spot.

A pair of sloths lives in the South America House at Jaderpark, which they can leave in an outdoor aviary when the weather is good. True to sloth nature, this is only possible by climbing high up on branches.
