Siamang
Symphalangus syndactylus
The largest gibbon species is the siamang. These animals are jet black. Their most distinctive feature, however, is a football-sized throat sac that they inflate when calling. This massive resonating chamber allows them to produce deafening calls that mark their territory over many kilometers.
Unfortunately, this impressive ape species is also on the list of endangered animals.
Currently living in our park are “Roger,” born in Dublin, and “Pelangi” from the Duisburg Zoo. Both have raised several offspring in the meantime. The small family group is always roughly the same size. As soon as a third child is born, the oldest must leave the family group and start a family of its own.
