Red-handed tamarin
Saguinus midas
Red-handed tamarins belong to the marmoset family. As South American species, they share the newly built South America House with tapirs, capybaras, anteaters, and sloths. As tree dwellers, they have their own aviary. As with the golden-headed lion tamarins, the male is responsible for caring for the young. In the first weeks of life, they cling tightly to their father’s back. They are handed over to the mother only for nursing.
