Plain zebra
Equus quagga
A small herd of plains zebras lives alongside giraffes and antelopes in our large “Africa enclosure.” As the name suggests, there are various species of zebra in Africa. You can easily tell them apart by the pattern of their stripes. But that’s not all: you can also distinguish individual animals. To do this, you need to look at the animal’s rear end. The stripe pattern is different for each one.
Zebras are very self-assured, especially the stallions, so you have to be very careful when handling them. In group housing, the zookeepers have to keep a close eye on the animals, because every now and then the stallion decides he’s the boss of the enclosure. In such cases, he might be put in a separate pen until tempers have cooled down.
