Great anteater
Myrmecophaga tridactyla
Our two animals are both females: mother Pepita and her daughter Estella. They came to us from Zurich Zoo and are part of an animal conservation program, the EEP (European Endangered Species Programme). This indicates that this species needs help to survive in the wild. Pepita herself comes from Argentina, where she was found as a cub and had to be bottle-fed. Since releasing her back into the wild wasn't possible, she came to Zurich Zoo, where her daughter Estella was later born.
At Jaderpark, the two live in a very large enclosure in the central part of the zoo, next to the adjacent South America House. As dietary specialists, they receive a specially formulated mash made from a variety of ingredients.
