Elen antelope
Taurotragus oryx
Several large African animals live together on our 4-hectare “African savannah”. Whilst this is a wonderful sight for visitors, it is a very demanding task for the animal keepers.
Eland antelopes are the largest of the antelope species. In some countries, attempts have been made to keep them for meat production. As herd animals, up to 500 individuals can live together. The herd size depends on the food supply. They are quite fussy eaters and even use their front hooves to dig up tubers and roots or use their horns to break off twigs and fruit.
Our small herd is very friendly and consists of two males and one female.
